He was the son of Donald and Jeannette (Bates) Merlet. Roger was a 1962 graduate of Beloit High School.

He married Phyllis Sword on September 23, 1967 in St. Peter Catholic Church, South Beloit, Illinois.

Rogers greatest joy was his family and farming. He farmed with his brother, Russell, until 2003 and continued farming until his sudden death. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, Newark-Beloit 4-H Club and was also a director with Newark Mutual Insurance. Roger loved his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Phyllis Merlet of Beloit, Wisconsin; two daughters, Shari (Joe) Zenz of Lancaster, Wisconsin and Karen (Brian) Smith of Helotes, Texas; five grandchildren, Katelyn, Cole, Jacob, Claira and Megan; mother, Jeannette Merlet of Beloit, Wisconsin; sister, Lois (Bob) Kane of Stone Lake, Wisconsin; sisters-in-law, Jan Merlet of Beloit, WI, Sharon (Joel) Robbins of Lake Hills, Texas, Carol (Bob) Nichols of Bandera, Texas and Jo Ellen (Richard) Smith of Rockton, IL; brother-in-law, Tom Popanz of South Range, WI; numerous nieces, nephews, close friends and neighbors. He was predeceased by his father, Donald, father and mother-in-law, Eugene and Ruth Sword, brother, Russell, and sister-in-law, Diane Popanz.

His funeral was held on April 16, 2008 at St. Jude Catholic Church, Beloit, Wisconsin, with Father Steve Kortendick officiating. Burial will be in Newark Cemetery. Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home and Crematorium, Beloit, WI assisted the family.
